This funeral service was arranged under the auspices of the Prague Society of Musical Artists, whose annual concerts had been previously directed by František Škroup. Bohemia 13/2/1862 reported that a funeral service for Franz Škraup [František Škroup] had been arranged by the Prague Society of Musical Artists under the patronage of Count Ernst Waldstein to take place on Saturday 15th February at 11am in the church of St Salvator. Participating were to be members of the ‘des k. böhm. Landestheaters’ [Royal Czech Estates Theatre]. To be performed would be ‘Mozart’s Requiem and a Quartet with chorus by L. Spohr.’

The Národní listy 16/2/1862 post-event report related that a great many people attended the service, to the extent that the church could barely contain the number of mourners. The correspondent, signed ‘=’, reported: ‘Requiem for Škroup. Yesterday at 11am took place in the Church of St Salvator a solemn Requiem for the deceased Škroup. The performance by the Theatre orchestra combined with members of the Prague opera was of the great Requiem in D minor by Mozart. The Mass was read by Canon Mařan with numorous assistants. A great many public came to the church, so that the religious service was full and many mourners had to remains before the gates of the church.

The Czech-language arts periodical Lumír reviewed this event as part of an extended biographical article about Škroup published in the issues 13/2/1862 and 20/2/1862. Concerning the funeral service at St Salvator, the Lumír correspondent noted in the issue dated 20/2/1862 that the ‘Society of Prague Musicians combined with members of the Estates Theatre performed on 15th February at St Salvator to honour the memory of František Škroup, who worked greatly for the benefit of the society, Mozart’s Requiem, and today about 9[am] the abbot of [the] Břevnov and Broumov [monasteries] the venerable Prorector Dr Jan. N. Rotter, in Břevnov gives a service for Škroup in which besides the musicians of the monastery there will be performing some pupils of the Prague Conservatory.’

None of the reviews by Národní listy, Lumír or Dalibor mentioned that a work by Spohr was performed at this event. This has not therefore been included in the event record of the programme.

Prague societies and musical institutions participating in performances arranged by the Society of Musical Artists during the early 1860s included members of the Žofín Academy, members of the Cecilia Society, members of the male voice singing society Hlahol, members of the Estates Theatre operas, members of the Prague Männergesangverein, pupils of the local Conservatory, and many amateurs. Whether any or all of these institutions participated in the event was not mentioned by the specified sources. František Škroup had died on 7/2/1862 in Rotterdam where he was Kapellmeister of the local opera.
