Fund for the Foundation of the Czech National Theatre
Národní listy 15/8/1861 announced that three benefit entertainments in aid of the fund for the building of a Czech National Theatre would be given on 20/8, 27/8 and 3/9/1861. The first evidently did not take place, since the production occurring on 3/9/1861 was subsequently described by the newspaper on 3/9/1861 as the ‘second’ beseda. The production to be given on 27/8 was postponed for two days until 29/8/1861 because of inclement weather. Although later periodical reports did not identify the works to be performed in these productions, the original announcement published by Národní listy 15/8/1861 noted that ‘two large choruses’ were to be given.
Prager Morgenpost 29/8/1861 published an advertisement announcing: ‘Island Great-Venice [Gross-Venedig]. Today Thursday takes place the first Garden Festival followed by Dance-reunion for the benefit of the Czech National Theatre, which was cancelled on Tuesday due to the unfavourable weather. Admission tickets from the previous Beseda are valid.’ The daily entertainment almanac of Čas 29/8/1861 listed ‘on 29th August... On Stvanice: Military music.’
