Commentary:

The Dalibor 1/8/1860 review did not include further details about the programme of this concert, but made particular reference to the fact that Böhme played the tenor trombone, and not the keyed bass instrument. The unspecified reviewer praised the tone of the former, but concluded that the keyed instrument was better suited to a more coloratura style of writing. Böhme’s performed his composition ‘very well [velmi slušně] and was for his efforts several times curtain called.’

A more detailed, unsigned review was published by Prager Zeitung 1/8/1860: ‘On Monday Herr Friedrich August Böhme, military music director from Dresden, gave a concert in the Neustädter Theatre on the trombone, an instrument that to us is antiquated and only really associated any more with the conferring of doctorates and sometimes with funerals, and proved himself, despite the difficulties presented by the most unobliging handling and still more the brittle character of sound and the insecurity of tone, all of which mitigate against virtuoso musicianship, to be entirely a master. Of the three pieces performed, the hymn from Stradella was the most appealing, as in this the flawless rendering of the slow, solemn prayer movement, together with the blaring malediction that follows and the ceremonial finale are better suited to the character of the instrument than are the difficult passages and embellishments of Herr Böhme’s own composition Abschied von der sächsischen Schweiz. Because of the unsuitable arrangement whereby the performance began with the concerto by Rex, the latter was lost to a large part of the audience. After each number Herr Böhme received friendly applause and curtain calls.

The performance of Bastille, which separated the two parts of the concert, was highly animated. The evening ended with a Tanzdivertissiment, very elegantly arranged by Herr Reisinger, the enjoyment of which was only affected by the tiring lengths of the two first numbers. Yet the grotesque leaps of the Moorish Dance by Herr Freund and the pupils of the Dance School, the pas de trois of the ladies Belke and Henze with Herr Reisinger, and the Shawlgruppierungen of the complete ballet [troupe], were all a great success. Owing to the onset of rain shortly before the start of the event, attendance at the theatre was weaker than this most interesting evening deserved.
