Commentary:

News of this event, given as part of the festival for the visit of the Emperor Franz Joseph to Prague, was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 7/5/1854. The source reported that a rehearsal had been held for it in Count Waldstein’s Riding School [part of the complex of the Waldstein Palace] on 6th May, and that Kapellmeister Swoboda had been commissioned by the Archduke Leopold to write the music. On 14th May the newspaper related that the band of the Dragoons Regiment of the King of Bavaria would be coming to Prague from Brandeis [Brandys nad Labem?] in order to perform in the great Caroussel being arranged for the ‘Festival of the Visit to Prague of His Royal Apostolic Majesty [Franz Joseph].’

A detailed account of the ‘Caroussel’ was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 8/6/1854. The source listed in full the aristocracy and military personnel attending, described the decorations of the venue and the proceedings. The principal participants in some of the dances were specified. The dance compositions were not identified other than by their basic titles, ‘Quadrille’ etc. To conclude the event a tableau was displayed and the national anthem performed. Attending the event was not only Franz Joseph but his deposed predecessor Ferdinand, who Mercy’s Anzeiger 8/6/1854 reported had arrived in Prague that evening from his summer residence at Ploschowitz [Ploscovice].
