Commentary:

Bohemia 6/5/1854 and Der Tagesbote 6/5/1854 published news of this festival taking place on 7/5/1854 and being entitled ‘Fest à la Prater / Praterfeste’, Der Tagesbote noting that it would involve ‘Mr Tschugmal with his winter landscape, Mr Hein with his automatons and Mr Reiter with his magic show. Also a Policinell-Theatre was be presented. In the evening the hall at the venue would be brightened with banners [Abends wird der Saal mit Transparenten erleuchtet].’

A brief description of this event on 7/5/1854 was published by Der Tagesbote 8/5/1854 which described the occasion as ‘a jolly amusement with comedians, automatons and fireworks’. Mercy’s Anzeiger 9/5/1854 reported that ‘The Praterfest given in the Station Garden on Sunday [7/5/1854] was exceedingly successful. It was attended by over 3000 people. Mr Tschuggmall’s Winterlandscape, Mr Hein’s automatons gained great approbration, and the magician Mr Reiter was very warmly applauded for his part. We particularly liked the artistic piece “Die schlafende Griechin”. Yesterday there was a repeat of the festival, and as we hear, it will take place again today (Tuesday) and Wednesday.’ No details of any musical entertainment given as part of the festival were related by this source. Evidently, the festival continued at the location until 16th May, the event on that date being reported by Mercy’s Anzeiger 16/5/1854 and described as taking place ‘for the final time’. The close of the festival would include fireworks given by the pyrotechnician Mr Hawranek [Havránek].
