Commentary:

Der Tagesbote 19/7/1854 reported that ‘On 22nd [July] there would take place the practical examinations for pupils of the Humanitarian Musical Society, which was associated with the Music Institute of Mr Cölestin Müller. The programme contains such very interesting numbers as “Ouverture zu Tell”, “Katzenfuge” by Scarlatti, “Aufforderung zum Tanz” by Carl Maria Weber. The Institute deserves acknowledgment that among its 90 pupils, 30 are educated free.’

An unsigned review of this event was published by Der Tagesbote 23/7/1854. The correspondent remarked that the occasion was attended by ‘a numerous and elegant public’ and that both the wide salon and the gallery of the venue were full. The standards of pupils of ‘delicate age’ [i.e. young] were praised; they were attributed in part to the high artistic standards and the choice of works by such ‘first heroes of music’ as Mendelssohn, Scarlatti and Hummel, all of which were given with rare precision. Mr Müller provides his pupils not only with the ability to overcome technical difficulties but also with artistic understanding. Of the individual performances of particular excellence was thought to be that of Mr Porges who played Schulhoff’s ‘Carneval’ to thunderous applause and had to encore the piece. The performances of Misses B. Wehle [Wehleová] and P. Wahle [Wahleová] were also considered  to be praiseworthy.
