Der Tagesbote 8/5/1854 reported that two contrasting Festivals were given on 7th May, a jolly [lustig] amusement with a comedian, automatons and fireworks in the Eisenbahngarten, a more relaxed [gemütliche] Promenade in the Arboretum. The latter event was attended by His Majesty the Emperor Ferdinand and the Queen Caroline Auguste [Caroline Augusta of Bavaria (1792-1873) – wife of the Emperor Francis I] who were noted to have promenaded amongst ‘an awe-inspired’ public while the music of the national anthem [Volkshymne] was played. Also attending were the Archduke of Tuscany, the Duke of Modena and the Count von Chambourd. Ferdinand, held in considerable regard and affection in Prague, was frequently titled Emperor [Kaiser] by the city’s newspapers in the years following his abdication in 1848.
Mercy’s Anzeiger 5/5/1854 published an advertisement announcing ‘Sunday, 7th May will be playing in the Royal Estates Arboretum [k. ständischen Baumgarten] the Music Ensemble of Archduke Albrecht from 6 o’clock early [i.e. 6am] and then throughout the day.’ No further details were given by the source. The same source also contained an advertisement announcing ‘Great orchestra of the Royal Military; afternoons. On the Žofín Island: Tuesday, Friday, Sunday; in Zdekauer’s (formerly Count Canal’s Garden): Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday; in the Estates Arboretum: Sunday and Thursday.’ This Festival event would have constituted one of the entertainments in this series.
