The Dalibor review remarked that ‘The success of these examinations was magnificent, fulfilling our hopes that under the leadership of Mr [Zikmund] Kolešovský this institute will blossom and bear good fruit, if it will give up [presenting] frequent concerts and look rather to systematic teaching.’ Kolešovský resigned from the post of director of the Žofín Academy in November 1859. The review specifically criticized Nejedlý, the teacher of the lower singing classes, for his overpowering piano accompaniment in the performances given by the weaker voiced pupils of the lower class. The critic also wished that instead of having pupils sing difficult German songs and arias Nejedlý would have them perform Czech songs, and particularly folksongs ‘for they are delicate things, more straightforward and easier as to their realisation.’ Concerning the teaching of piano to the lower class of the school, the review asserted that ‘we are convinced, that the pupils under the guidance of the teacher Miss Čechová have made notable strides.’ The teaching of singers and pianists in the Academy’s higher class, undertaken respectively by Zikmund Kolešovský and Vilém Graf, was considered by the Dalibor critic to have been very successful.
Pupils of the lower singing class listed by the Dalibor review comprised Miss Bapt. Žurnová, Miss Emilie Poláková and Miss M. Nitšová. Pupils listed from the higher singing class comprised Miss Jos. Mourková, Marie ‘Cantany’ [Cantani], and Miss M. Formánková. The lower class pupils performed during the morning, until 12 noon. The higher class pupils performed during the afternoon.
