Commentary:

Regular series of musical entertainments arranged and given by Prague music teaching institutes were a feature of the Lenten season in Prague when dance entertainments were not permitted.

Prager Morgenpost 10/3/1859 published news that ‘In the Music Institute of Mr P. Maydl will take place in this years Lenten season on 13, 20 and 27 March and 3, 10, 16 April each time at 5pm a musical soirée.’ No specific advance details of the programmes were given, although they were noted to include performances of vocal works under the leadership of Mr Vogel [František Vogel, director of song at the institute]. Of the first soirée Prager Morgenpost subsequently published no more information, although general information about the whole series of soirées again appeared in the newspaper on 13/3/1859, and a general review of the second soirée was given the issue of 22/3/1859. Reviews then appeared in Prager Morgenpost on 3/4/1859, the programme to the sixth and final soirée was listed on 16/4/1859, and a summary review of the events appeared in the issue of 22/4/1859.

Dalibor 20/3/1859 published news that
during the lent period the piano institutes of Maydl and Müller would be giving a series of evening musical entertainments [in the German sources usually described as ‘Soirée musicales’, in Czech sources ‘Hudební soirée’]. The first was noted as having taken place on Sunday 13 March, the next were to be on 20/3/1859 and 27/3/1859, then on 3, 10 and 16 April, all at 5pm. The text noted that details of the programmes would be published by the periodical following the final entertainment, and this indeed appeared in Dalibor 10/5/1859. No other specific details of the first production were given by the periodical.
