Commentary:

Basic details of this event were published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 23/7/1857. The source reported: ‘The Prague Music Institutes are now beginning their annual examinations... the pupils of the Prague Humanitarian Music Institute will in conjunction with the pupils of the Music Institute for Mr Celöstin Müller give their productions on 25th July at 4pm and on 26th July at 12 noon in the Hal of the Žofín Island.’ No further details were given by the source.

A brief review, signed ‘-f-e’, of these examinations appeared in Tagesbote aus Böhmen 29/7/1857. The correspondent reported that: ‘As known from in the past. the performances of the students of this Institution are excellent. From the rich programme of 23 numbers including some very significant pieces, we pass over some very good performances and mention only the last number: the first Concerto by Liszt, performed by Miss Božena Swoboda. Miss Swoboda was received as enthusiastically by the audience on her appearance as brilliantly at the end of the performance, as the audience believed they were getting to hear the young lady for the last time as a student before she said farewell to take up as an aspiring virtuoso. But we hope that Miss Swoboda, who is already one of the best pianists of out musical capital, we shall begin to encounter in the concert hall.’ The source concluded by wishing the Institute still further success.

No indication was given by the Tagesbote aus Böhmen reports as to whether an orchestra or a smaller accompanying ensemble participated in these examinations.
