Commentary:

Bohemia 24/12/1858 published an item of news announcing a ‘Musik- und Sänger-Fest’ [Music and Song-Festival] to take place in the Konvikt Hall on Sunday and including the ensemble of the Regiment of Baron Wernhardt, and the family Remele [Remmele] ‘in their National Costume performing to Zither and Guitar accompaniment.’ Prager Morgenpost 25/12/1858 published a large advertisement for the Konvikt Hall event similarly noting the participants and nature of the event, reporting that it would commence at 4pm and end after midnight and stating that admisson was 12kr.

An advertisment appeared in Bohemia 24/12/1858 announcing that at 4pm on Sunday 26/12/1858 in the Žofín Hall the ensemble of the 16th Infantry Regiment of Baron Wernhardt would perform in a musical rehearsal for the forthcoming January Society Ball. Although the appearance of Wernhardt’s ensemble at Žofín seemingly conflicts with the Konvikt event, there is little reason to doubt the veracity of these reports or to suppose that only one of the productions could have taken place. On the day of the performances the Tageskalender of Bohemia 26/12/1858 related that the Konvikt Hall ‘Music- and Song- Festival’ commenced at 5pm. Possibly the musical rehearsal in Žofín lasted only one hour, but more likely is that there was then more than one ensemble of musicans from Wernhardt’s regiment performing. This is suggested too by other details from the respective sources covering the events. For the rehearsal in the Žofín Hall the ensemble appearing there is described by the relevant sources as the ‘large orchestra of the 16th Infantry Regiment of Baron Wernhardt’, whereas the Konvikt production is noted simply as ‘ensemble of the Infantry Regiment of Baron Wernhardt’, possibly indicating a smaller, secondary musical body. Furthermore, at the Žofín event the orchestra was ‘under the personal direction of their Capellmeister L. Jeschko [Ješko].’ Wernhardt’s musicians were indeed led by Ješko during the late 1850s and appeared under his direction in Prague on many occasions. For the Konvikt event however Ješko was not specified as the director and we may reasonably assumed that the ensemble was led by some other individual.
