Commentary:

Prager Morgenpost 10/5/1863 published news of this event, reporting: ‘Garden Festival [Gartenfest]. On the Rohan Island, one of Prague’s favourite social amusement venues [Vergnügungsorte], takes place today a Garden Festival, at which the Regimental Musical Ensemble of the Royal Infantry Regiment King Wilhelm I of Prussia will be performing.’ An advertisement was also published by this issue of Prager Morgenpost, relating: ‘Rohan Island. Today Garden Festival [Garten-Fest] at which the Regimental Musical Ensemble of the worthy Royal Infantry Regiment King Wilhelm I. of Prussia under the personal direction of the Kapellmeister Mr Lewengly will be performing. Commencing 4 o’clock. Admission 10kr.’

Although both sources referred to this event as a ‘Gartenfest’, the designation was not necessarily indicative that the occasion’s content had any specifically horticultural or ‘garden’ character other than it took place in the open air in the Rohan Island gardens.
