Commentary:

The Tagesprogramm of the German-language newspaper Bohemia 19/1/1863 noted: ‘8pm in the Spa Hall: Associations Ball [Verbindungsball].’

A review, signed ‘§’, of this event was published by Prager Morgenpost 22/1/1863. The correspondent reported: ‘Austria-Ball. The Ball, which the local German Student Association „Austria“ arranged in the Spa Hall in the Little Quarter, ranked as the most beautiful dance festival so far of this year’s Carnival. The pretty white and gold decorated and with the natural decoration of the garland occupied Hall made for a very inspirational picture. At the rear of the Hall, surrounded by floral bouquets, stood the busts of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress. Besides the members of
„Austria“, were also numerously represented at this ball festival were the other student associations „Albia“, „Karolina“, „Konstantia“, „Tutonia“, as well as the group „Rugia“. The Associations’s students wore the colours of their societies on their breasts and insignia on their arms [armbands], the Gymasts [Turner] wore the black-red-gold band and the Gymnast-cross [Turner-kreuz]. The Ball-Stewards had as badges on the breast a bow in the Association colours „Black-White-Orange“ with the name of their Association in silver. A great number of doctors of individual faculties and several professors came as guests, as well as several state official, so that is seemed like ‘en pleine parade’. The event was said to have been well attended by ladies as well as the gentlemen members of the student societies, and the dancing continued into the small hours.
