Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele
Mercadante, Giuseppe Saverio Rafaele (1795-1870). Italian composer. Educated at the Collegio di San Sebastiano in Naples and briefly became leader of the orchestra there. He then pursued a career as an opera composer, active in Italy, in Vienna (1827-1829), in Spain and then again in Italy becoming director of the Naples Conservatory in 1840. Composed abour 60 operas, many of which were successfully received; also much church music, and some instrumental music and songs.
