Karel Simeon Macháček

Macháček, Karel Simeon (1799-1846). Czech poet and librettist, writer and translator. One of the first major translators of German classical works of literature, especially by Goethe and Schiller, into the Czech language. From 1828 he resided in the town of Jičín where he was active in promoting local music culture, particularly in the local opera house. He was active too as a Czech poet, writing many song texts that were set to music by contemporaries, and opera libretti.
