The German-language Prague newspaper Tagesbote aus Böhmen 25/10/1857 published news that ‘The conductor, Mr František Skraup [Škroup] has gained authorization to found a vocal training institute in Prague. Instruction is given in three classes; in all classes music theory forms a basic constituent [of teaching], and embraces general music theory, rhythm, harmony, and the doctrine of counterpoint, and the strict art forms necessary for the artistic education of a singer. The opening of the Institute is to take place on 2nd November for female pupils, but Mr Skraup has agreed to admit male pupils too.’
