Name: Žofín Academy

Commentary:
Žofín Academy. Prague musical institute principally for teaching young, mainly amateur singers. Founded in 1840 as the Prager Singakademie [Akademie ku zvelebení zpěvu a hudby] it acquired the name Sophienakademie out of respect to its founder patron, the Archduchess Sophie. Its course of tuition encompassed solo and choral song, piano playing, music theory, declamation, aesthetics and music history. The direction of the Academy’s aesthetic outlook and precise activities varied with its changing directors. Concerts by its pupils represented an important part of Prague musical life throughout its existence. Over the years 1840 to the middle 1860s these productions variously comprised eclectic mixtures of modern and older sacred and secular works, passed through a phase of large scale orchestral-choral productions of such works as the Choral Symphony, and during the late 1850s and early 1860s flirted for a time with an emphasis on patriotically inspired and nationally orientated musical art. Membership of the Academy in 1850 cost 6fl per annum; in 1854 this ranged from 1fl 30kr per month in the first [lower] singing class to 2fl 30kr in the second [higher]. Lumír 2/9/1854 related that the costs for Czech [i.e. from the Czech lands, irrespective of language] pupils was between 1fl 30kr and 2fl 30kr, for foreign student 3kr per month. Poor students were taught without charge.

New pupils were accepted in trials held at the end of September or beginning of October (see, for example, Mercy’s Anzeiger 3/9/1854 which reported that applications were accepted from 15th September with trial examinations on 30th). The institute was first located in Bethlehem Square no.251 [Betlémské náměstí - Betlemsplatz]. Its director until October 1850 was J.N. Maýr, who was then succeeded by briefly by Václav Horák, then by Fr. Vogl (1851). Other directors included František Škroup, J.L. Zvonař (1860-3) and Eduard Tauwitz (from 1863).

Mercy’s Anzeiger 30/9/1854 announced in its section of local news that ‘Practise and rehearsals at the Žofín Academy begin on 4th October. As is generally known pupils are admitted only on 2nd October.’

Prager Morgenpost 27/9/1863 reported that pupils would be admitted to the Academy on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th September from 4pm until 6pm in the rooms of the Academy by the director.  The school year would commence on 1st October with all pupils needing to assemble in the Institute at 11am.
