Name: Svoboda's Singing and Theatrical Company

Commentary:
Svoboda’s Singing and Theatrical Company. Private musical and theatrical company organized by J. Svoboda. Performing in Prague in 1863. A report detailing this company was published by Prager Morgenpost 14/10/1863. The source noted: ‘Swoboda’s Singspielhalle. [Svoboda’s Singing and Theatrical Company – although ‘Singspiel’ may of course be translated as musical comedy, the Czech rendering of the company’s name was ‘Zpěvní a herecká beseda’ - Singing and theatrical circle - which does suggest a group whose entertainments were more multifarious than specifically comic music-theatre.] After the example of the favourite Singspielhallen of Fürst and Barry in Vienna, so also in Prague a similar Institute has been established for the entertainment of patrons of hostelries. Last Saturday the „first Entertainment“ [erste Verstellung] by this Singspielhalle took place in the Czech language, and the day before last in the German tongue. A very numerous audience attended the performance the day before yesterday in the Žofín Island Hall, took to the gambling tables, gloried in the food and drink, and at the same time gave eyes and ears to the Singspielhalle. Even if the „Singspielhalle“ for the time being is made up only of amateurs, it still fulfills its principal purpose – through the most laughter comes happiness [‘man lacht zumeist und ist dann zufrieden’]. Comic song pieces and couplets were combined with declamations and productions on the piano. The players have a very pleasing, portable Theatre... When it attracts a good company, the Singspielhalle certainly gains the favour of the public, the day before yesterday absolutely testified to this in the applause and with every actor several times being recalled. The admission price is very reasonable.’ Subsequent performances were often tailored specifically to Czech or to German audiences, this being specified in pre-event notices. Sometimes a performance would be noted as ‘Gemischte’, evidently a combination of the two.
