Institutionsdetails
Name: Piano Institute of Bedřich Šimák
Commentary:
The piano institute of Bedřich Šimák, according to a report appearing in Dalibor 10/5/1859, p.111, gained official permission to open on 9/7/1854. Teaching probably commenced in September of that year, and the institute remained active until its founder’s death in 1886. It was located in the Malá strana [Kleinseite / Little Quarter], no.272, and the school year spanned mid-September until July. Performance examinations before a public audience were held in July. Lumír 15/10/1857, p.1002 reported that the institute had a large number of members due to the reknown of its director as a virtuoso and composer of salon music. The periodical text also noted that lessons cost 4 zl per annum.
