Fire victims in Chrudim
News of this event was published by Bohemia 5/9/1850, the correspondent signed ‘Δ’ reporting that ‘Sunday 8th September will be given in the Konvikt Hall for the local Burghers [Bürgern - townsmen] a Beseda with song and declamations (perhaps also with dance), the profit from which is destined for the fire-affected town of Chrudim.’ No further details of the occasion were noted by this source. The Tageszanzeiger text of Bohemia 6/9/1850 listed this event for the day of Sunday 8th September as ‘Evening in the Konvikt Hall: Beseda with song and declamation for the benefit of fire victims in Chrudim.’ However, no details appeared in the Tagesanzeiger text of Bohemia 8/9/1850.
That the Beseda did not take place on the date originally stipulated was later confirmed by a post-event report, again signed ‘Δ’, published by Bohemia 12/9/1850. This related that on ‘Monday took place in the Konvikt Hall a Beseda for the benefit for fire-affected Chrudim’. Attending was a numerous audience and a profit of 131fl 9kr obtained. ‘The hall was decorated with flags of the colours of the Austrain Slavic lands. The conversation was animated and casual, and despite the extreme heat in the hall there was much dancing. In the rest-hours [Raststunden - lit. rest hours, i.e. interval] was singing and declamations, though we fancied that the programme was not so well-chosen as at previous Besedas.’
