Advance news of this event was published by Dalibor 10/8/1860, the source reporting that ‘On Sunday 12th August at 9am will be a performance in the Týn church of a great mass by the young and talented composer Mr Martin Nováček, chorus director from Bílý Cerkev in Serbia. We are highlighting this work to lovers of church music, in view of its interesting contrasts [modulaci].’
The unsigned review published by Dalibor 20/8/1860 praised this mass by Nováček, a ‘young and ingenious composer’ from ‘Bílý Církev v Banatě’ [Bela Crkva in Banat, Eastern Serbia]. Considered by the Dalibor critic to exhibit more expressive and pictorial effect rather than contrapuntal and fugal stringency, the work was deemed to be cast in ‘modern church music style.’ Specific attention was drawn to the effective setting in the Credo of the ‘Crucifixus’ and ‘passus et sepultus est’. The Benedictus was thought to be particularly beautiful in terms of its expressive content. Although the performance was described as being ‘fair’, the review remarked that the production suffered owing to the deficiency of the organ in requiring a larger pedal board. The source concluded by noting that copies of the score of the work could be obtained from the the editor of Dalibor [Em. Meliš] for 1zl 60kr.
