Mercy’s Anzeiger 24/11/1854 published news that ‘The concert of the Society of Musical Artists for their Widows and Orphans is now scheduled for the afternoon of 23rd December and will take place in the Hall of Žofín Island.’ No further details of this event were given by this issue of the newspaper. Further information was published by this newspaper on 10/12/1854 in a report relating that ‘The Prague Society of Musical Artists will for the benefit of their Widows- and Orphans-Institute on 23rd December with the participation of the Žofín Academy, the Cecilia Society, the pupils of the Conservatory, the members of the orchestra of the Royal Estates Theatre and with many dilettantes perform the oratorio „Der Messias“ by Händel and Mozart. The Misses Meyer and Weiß and Messrs Emminger and Dr Schmidt have been named for the solo parts. The news that the oratorio was being given in its arrangement by Mozart was particularly noteworthy.
Der Tagesbote 10/12/1854 reported that the local Society of Musical Artists were arranging on Saturday 23rd December a performance of Mozart’s arrangement of Handel’s oratorio Messiah. Participating in the performance woould be ‘Gentlemen and Ladies of the Žofín Academy, of the Cecilia Society, the pupils of the local Conservatory, the orchestra members of the Estates Theatre and many dilettantes. The solo parts would be sung by Miss Meyer [Meyerová], Miss Weiß [Weissová], Mr Emminger and Dr Schmid. No further details of the event were given by this source.
The date of this event originally being 23rd December was confirmed by the report of Lumír 12/12/1854. The periodical related that the ‘Society of local musicians to benefit their widows and orphans arranges this year as every year on 23rd December a great concert on Žofín. It will give Handel and Mozart’s „Messias“. Besides the theatre orchestra will be participating members of the Žofín Academy and Cecilians [members of the Cecilia Society], then pupils of the local Conservatory and many dilettantes. The main parts will be sung by Miss Meyerová and Filomena Weiszová, Dr Schmid and in place of Mr Eminger who is seriously ill will be Lukes or Reichel.’ On 16/12/1854 the periodical reported that ‘In the oratorio Messias ([given] on the holiday) will sing Mr Lukes in place of Mr Eminger who has pneumonia.’
Mercy’s Anzeiger 15/12/1854 reported that ‘The reported performance of the „Messias“ arranged for 23rd December has due to unforseen circumstances been postponed until the first days of next month. The solo voice parts of Miss Meyer [Meyerová] and the ill Mr Eminger have been taken by Mrs Botschon [Botschon-Soukupová] and Mr Lukes.’ On 21/12/1854 the newspaper repeated this information, relating that ‘It was made known in [issue] nr.345 of the „Anz.“ [Mercy’s Anzeiger] that the performance of the „Messias“ has had to be postponed due to unforseen cirsumstances. This production is now scheduled for 5th January with a new programme.’ No further details were given by this source. The Czech-language periodical Lumír 19/12/1854 reported that the ‘Oratorio „Messiáš“ is postponed until 5th January. The main soprano part will be sung by the excellent singer Mrs Bočonová, née Soukupová.’
On 22/12/1854 Der Tagesbote announced that the performance had been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, and would take place on 5th January in the Žofín Hall. The solo parts would be sung by the ladies Botschon-Soukup [Botschon-Soukupová] and Weiß [Weissová], and the gentlemen Lukes and Dr Schmid.
