Commentary:

Under the title of ‘Musica sacra’ Prager Morgenpost 21/11/1863 reported upon a celebration of mass to be given in the Sv Josef church to celebrate the St Cecilia’s Day. The source noted: ‘Musica sacra. Worthy preparations are underway in all quarters for the festival on Sunday 22nd November of the Holy Cecilia, the patron saint of church music. Thus at St Josef’s [Church], where at 11 o’clock high mass under the direction of Mr Josef Krejčí and with the participation of many art-loving ladies and gentlemen will be performed the vocal Mass in F minor by Krejčí, a Graduale by Pierre de la Rue and an Offertorium by Palestrina. The two last works both number amongst the greatest in sublimity and noble religious expression from their representative epochs of the old church-music art and specifically of the Dutch and old Latin [altrömisch] schools. The flowering [Blüthezeit – lit. ‘flowering time’, i.e. the apogee] of the first came at the turn of the 15th and 16th Centuries, the latter in the second half of the 16th Century.’ No further details were given of the event by this source, although the report did though go on to draw attention to a performance by the Czech singing society Hlahol on Sunday [22/11/1863] of a Mass by Durante from the year 1740.

The Tagesanzeiger daily almanac of Prague social and musical events published by Prager Morgenpost 22/11/1863 related of this occasion: ‘11am Music performance in the St Joseph Church (J. Krejčí’s vocal Mass).’ Interestingly the earlier 10am Hlahol event in St Francis Church was not noted.
