Commentary:

The thirteenth supplement of Lumír 1854, published on 18/3/1854, published an account of the annual Slovanská pouť that had taken place on the previous day in Charles Square. The event was described as the first and biggest of the Easter celebrations. It commenced in the morning in the church of the Emauzý Monastary with the Cardinal Archbishop celebrating mass. In the afternoon a great many people gathered in Charles Square. From the shops and inns along the left side of the Square the correspondent reported there was much music and happy singing. The Slovanská fair was noted to date from the time of Charles IV [Karel IV], the founder of the monastary.
