Venue name: Café Braithut

Venue rooms (type):

Café Braithut. According to Mercy’s Anzeiger 21/4/1854 located on the ‘Franzensquai’ (modern-day name Smetanovo nábřeží, the street and east bank of the Vltava between Žofín Island and Charles Bridge). On 25/5/1854, at the time of the Prague celebrations for the wedding of the Emperor Franz Joseph, Mercy’s Anzeiger reported that the café owner Mr G. Braithut had arranged a charitable event for 73 poor citizens who were given a midday meal with a glass of wine and coffee. Braithut was evidently successful in his restauranteur business; Tagesbote aus Böhmen 8/1/1857 reported that ‘The Cafetiér Mr. Braithut is renting the lower part of the Counts Schlick'schen palace in the neuen Allee [Nový alej] to establish a café there on grandest scale. The venue could not be better chosen for it. Mr. Braithut wants to produce something so brilliant that it should equal the leading cafés in the main cities of Europe. Mr. Behr will transfer objects of art to the Schlick’s Palace from his own house on Wenceslas Square, which he built for him [Schlick]. The cornices will be adorned by busts of the Benvenuto Cellini, Bischer and Michael Angelo, by the sculptor Mr. Camil Böhm.’
