Institution Details

Name: Estates Theatre chorus

Commentary:
Estates Theatre chorus. The chorus of the Estates Theatre (Königliches Ständestheater, after 1861 Königliches Landestheater), was drawn in the main from graduating members of private Prague singing schools and from the local Conservatory (in particular the lesser second class of singing, the Concert School). Outside of the theatre the ensemble would have participated in annual large-scale benefit concerts given for such bodies as the German Students’ Reading Room, the Institute for the Poor and the productions of the local Society of Musical Artists, and in other occasional concert productions. The chorus was rarely mentioned specifically in contemporary reports and reviews of concerts in which it participated as a clearly defined body; it seems to have functioned as simply an essentially anonymous group of singers working in the theatre and had little concrete identity outside that institution.

Prager Zeitung 3/10/1850 published a report of the Estates Theatre and its general activity during the past year, including a list of its major solo personnel and commenting upon the choir and orchestra. A regeneration of the former with fresh blood was advocated.

Prager Morgenpost 3/1/1863 reported that the choral forces of the German Estates Theatre comprised 21 male and 25 female voices.
