Commentary:

Tagesbote aus Böhmen 26/4/1854 reported that a wedding-festival for His Majesty [Franz Joseph] was celebrated in the Civil chambers [Bürger-Ressource]. No date was given for the event; either it took place on 24th or 25th April. The source described how the Reading Room of the venue [Lesezimmer] was decorated with a portrait painted by Mr Kroupa of the Emperor in coronation robes, and with a bust of his bride [Elizabeth]. A painting of the couple was present in the Salon, where 50 impoverished Bürgers feasted. The couple were toasted by the numerously assembled members and a national anthem sung with great feeling. This was accompanied by an unspecified instrumental ensemble and was later repeated. No further details of the event were related by the text.

The supplement 15 of Lumír 1854 published on 25/4/1854 gave a detailed account of events taking place on 24th April 1854, the day of the marriage of Franz Josef. The correspondent reported that ‘In the Měšťanská beseda was in the evening a banquet to celebrate this day; there was sung a hymn the text of which was by Hanka.’ No further details were given by this source describing this event or its musical content. The anthem and the hymn described by the two sources may have been the same work. However, the national anthem described by the German source may well have been the Austrian national anthem sung at the time and the work with a text by Hanka either a different piece or a translation by Hanka of the anthem.
