Music Institute of Celestin Müller / Humanitarian Musical Society

This Prague school for the teaching of music was founded and directed by Celestin Müller in 1852 under the patronage of Prince Lobkovic. The institute was frequently known simply as ‘Müller’s Music Institute’ but was also known the Humanitarian Musical Society [Humanistický hudební spolek], suggestive of aims to make musical tuition available to poorer classes. Singing and piano playing were taught, but primarily the latter. Pupils included the singers Ledererová and Berthová and the musicians Emanuel Chvála and J.B. Foerster.
