Dessauer, Josef (1798-1876). Czech pianist and composer. Studied piano with Diviš Weber and composition with Tomášek. He abandoned a family career as a merchant to follow a musical profession, gaining a reputation throughout Europe as a virtuoso pianist and as a popular composer of folk-inspired songs. Lumír 13/7/1854 related: ‘Dessauer, Praguer, composer of our time, particularly in lyrical music of a simple and charming style, combined in the creation of some operas (Besuch in St. Cyr and Pasquale).’
