Strauß
Strauss, Josef (1827-1870). Austrian composer. Trained and active as an engineer and designer his activities and career were also heavily involved with music, in particular composing and conducting. His output of around 300 dance works is dominated by waltzes and polkas, many exhibiting a remarkable degree of expressive substance. His elder, more famous, brother alleged that Josef was more accomplished as a composer than himself.
