Otto Nicolaï

Nicolaï, Carl Otto Ehrenfried (1810-1849). German composer and conductor. Demonstrated considerable talent for music as a child and continued his musical education in Berlin and Rome through the support of various patrons. From 1841 he was first conductor of the Kärntnertor Theatre in Vienna, and he founded the Philharmonic concerts there in 1842. In 1847 moved to Berlin, becoming the director of the Catholic choir and of the Court Opera. His output as a composer included several operas (some of which were revised by him and given new titles), church music, various items of orchestral and instrumental music, songs and choruses.
