Luigi Cherubini

Cherubini, Luigi (1760-1842). Italian composer. Studied first under his father at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, then later under Sarti in Venice. Produced his first opera in 1780, in 1785 and 1786 produced two further new operas in London. Settled in Paris in 1788 but continually struggled for success owing to the antipathy of Napoleon. His production of Faniska in Vienna in 1806 won considerable praise, but on returning to France he stagnated until the fall of the régime. Became attached to the royal chapel in 1816 and in 1822 was appointed director of the Paris Conservatoire. His substantial body of compositions includes operas, church music and instrumental (orchestral and chamber) music.
