Person details

Bedřich Šimák

Friedrich Schimak

Šimák, Bedřich (1826-1886). Czech pianist, pedagogue and composer. Pupil of Tomášek and Pichovský. During his early career he appeared often as a soloist in Prague concerts, and was engaged as a teacher of piano at the music institutes of Jiránek and Petr Maydl. In 1855 he obtained permission from the civil authorities to found his own institute for teaching the piano. Located in the Malá strana [Little Quarter] this proved successful and was run on similar lines to that of his colleague Maydl, contributing actively to Prague public concert life through its own regular performance productions. Its pupil included the pianist Karel ze Slavkovských. As a composer Šimák wrote exclusively for his instrument, primarily populist salon works, and some virtuoso and didactic pieces.
