Franz, Robert (1815-1892). German composer, organist and choir conductor. Real name Knauth. Despite parental opposition he painstakingly developed a musical career and by the middle 1840s was becoming established as one of the most proplific, popular and effective composers of German art song. Suffered from deafness in later life, retiring in 1868, but continued to work in editing church music.
