Ferdinand Hiller

Hiller, Ferdinand (1811-1885). German pianist, composer and conductor. Studied in Weimar with Hummel. Lived in Paris 1828-1835 where he taught and gave concerts. Later in Italy before moving back to Germany, becoming conductor at Düsseldorf in 1847 and Cologne in 1850 where he remained and was instrumental in founding the city's Conservatoire. Substantial output of dramatic vocal - orchestral works including operas and oratorios, instrumental and chamber music, songs and choruses.
