Friedrich von Flotow

Flotow, Friedrich von (1812-1883). German composer. Went to Paris in 1827 where he studied composition and began to produce operas in private circles. In 1839 he gained his first public stage success. Intendant of the court theatre at Schwerin 1856-1863. He returned to Paris but then from 1868 passed the remainder of his life in Vienna. Compositional output of many French, German and Italian operas. Also incidental music, chamber music and songs.
