Louis Moreau Gottschalk

Gottschalk, Louis Moreau (1829-1869). American pianist and composer. Travelled to Europe in 1842 to study piano, and although refused admission to the Paris Conservatoire he soon established himself as a popular virtuoso and as a composer for his often exotically perceived piano music. He returned to America in 1853 and spent the remainder of his life touring the continent performing and writing for his instrument.
