Prague Concert Life, 1850-1881

Institution Details

Name: Civil Grenadiers Corps

Commentary:

As part of the series of articles ‘Nynější stav hudby v Čechách vůbec a v Praze zvlášť’ [The present state of music in Bohemia in general and in Prague especially], Lumír 5/11/1857, p.1074 reported that the ‘Harmonie [wind band]’ of the Civilian Grenadiers consisted of 12 performers, then directed by Chrš [Chrs]. Of this and other lesser ensembles active in Prague in 1857 the Lumír report commented that ‘they play in the summer in lesser gardens [or parks] for the lower class public, who love great noise more than they do music.’ The text also expressed the wish that such bands rehearsed more assiduously.
