Commentary:Umělecká beseda [Artistic Society]. Society of Artists founded in Prague in 1863. Established with the aim of the nurture, investigation and practise of specifically Czech orientated arts. The Society was divided into our sections: literature; creative arts [e.g. painting, sculpture, architecture]; music; friends of art. The first general meeting of the Society took place on 28/1/1863. The music section met regularly to discuss music history, to perform and consider new works by contemporary local composers, and to arrange public concerts.
