Merkur. Prague social society of tradesmen, industrialists and merchants founded in late 1862, its founding charter officially ratified in the spring of 1863. Meetings of the society occasionally included social and musical entertainments. News of Merkur was published by Prager Morgenpost 5/10/1863, noting: ‘Society „Merkur“. At the close of the meeting of the Committee of the Society „Merkur“ the day before yesterday in the venue at the rear of the Bodenbacher Beer hall, it was considered and at the same time agreed, that the main focus of the Society should be the acquisition of a library, and the aquisition of scientific effects pertaining to commerce. The business and the purpose of this society is so topical and commendable, that it can certainly count on active attendance from its business members.’ The Society was not however solely concerned with business matters but held frequent social gatherings for its members. Often such occasions had musical content. According to Prager Morgenpost 22/11/1863, the Society’s venue in the Bodenbacher Beer hall opened on that day; a public notice appeared in that issue of the newspaper announcing: ‘„Merkur“ Today Opening Festival of the Society’s Venue. Postgasse Nr.299-1.’ In a later public notice appearing in Prager Morgenpost 26/11/1863, the Committee off the new society thanked the many Prague societies and institutions contributing to the opening. Interestingly the participating institutions derived equally from both German and Czech sides of Prague society.
