Private Society for the Support of the Prague Poorhouse. Charitable society funded by membership subscription and particularly active in Prague during the middle nineteenth century. The German-language Prague newspaper Bohemia 17/3/1850 published news that from 15/10/1849 until 15/3/1850 the society had daily provided soup to the poor to the total of 40,000 rations. Mercy’s Anzeiger 15/12/1854 reported that 2740 portions of food were to be distributed on one single day. Support for this society was also forthcoming from the Prague aristocracy; one notable patron was the Emperor Franz Josef who, Prager Zeitung 1/4/1857 reported, had recently donated 1000fl.
