Institution Details

Name: Music Institute of Josef Jiránek

Commentary:
According to Lumír 15/10/1857, p.1002 this private institute for teaching pianoforte received permission to open on 19/3/1846 with the annual cost of lessons then costing 4 zl. The institute was then located at no.776-2 Václavské náměstí (in the building known as the Platýz). Although the institute only taught piano, contemporary sources variously referred to it as either a ‘Music’ or a ‘Piano’ Institute. Courses began on 1st October with registration for the new year’s intake taking place from 1st September as, for example, indicated by an advertisement published for the institute in Mercy’s Anzeiger 30/8/1854. Teachers included [in 1854] Anna Vávra, Erbes and John. The presence of a woman teacher at this date in an institute of this calibre and for students of both sexes was unusual.
