Institution Details

Name: Music Institute of Petr Maydl

Commentary:
Music Institute of Petr Maydl. Located in Uhelný trh [Coal market / Kohlmarkt] next to the Platejs no.415-I on the first floor. Successful teaching institute for piano, singing and music theory founded in 1853, according to Lumír 15/10/1857, p. 1002, gaining official sanction on 19/7/1853 and giving lessons for the cost of 4 zl per annum. The institute evidently was immediately successful, Mercy’s Anzeiger 29/8/1854 publishing a public notice by Maydl announcing that registrations for the new year starting on 1st October were being accepted from 1st September, each day between 10am and 5pm. The teachers at various times included Karel Bendl, Eduard Nápravník, Josef Bayer and Čeněk Micko. Song was taught by František Vogl. The school year commenced at the beginning of September. Annual soirées were given by members of the institute during the spring and were open to the public, as were the annual performance examinations of pupils.

Maydl’s Institute evidently came to teach many pupils who were also students of local schools; Tagesbote aus Böhmen 25/9/1857 reported that Maydl was organizing the teaching hour times of his Institute on Wednesdays and Saturdays to fit in with those of local schools. This was confirmed in a public notice published in Tagesbote aus Böhmen 24/9/1857, there more specifically mentioning the Gymnasium and the Technical School.
