Commentary:

News of this event was published by Prager Zeitung 9/2/1862. The source reported that ‘The Prague Society Harmonia [Harmonie], whose members are dedicated to the advancement of song, music and declamation through performances of complete equality of national content, from time to time arrange evening entertainments in which individual members perform songs and pieces of music in German and Czech speech. Such an evening entertainment was given yesterday in the Konvikt Hall and was so numerously attended that the guests could barely squeeze into the Hall. Messrs Appé. Schäde, Fiedler, Walter junior, Wisner and Gnéd performed songs, Mr Popper played on the ’cello, Mr Hawik and Mr Kiehaupt performed compositions by Liszt. Mr Žižka gave a humorous lecture in the Czech language. The chorus, directed by Mr Appé, was excellent. ’ The text concluded by praising work of Appé, Schäde and collectively the entire committee of the Society.

No other reports of this occasion were published in any other of the major Czech- or German-language periodicals of the time. The lack of any other periodical coverage suggests that the event was exclusive to members of the society Harmonia. This is indicated too by the Prager Zeitung report using the word ‘Gäste [guests]’ to describe the attending audience.
