Commentary:

News of the forthcoming Sylvester celebrations of the German Casino were published by Prager Morgenpost 24/12/1863. The report noted: ‘This year’s Sylvester evening in the German Casino promises to be very animated...’ Included would be a musical ensemble and a tombola to which members were invited to bring items. The source also remarked: ‘Whether women are entitled to appear at this inspiring evening is yet to be decided.’ On 29/12/1863 Prager Morgenpost reported further upon the occasion, relating that at 10pm a meal would take place at the venue but that the ‘convivial celebrations commence at 8 o’clock in the evening, and is restricted, in view of the inadequate space in the German Casino, only to men.’ A tombola took place at midnight of gifts brought in by members. The decision not to admit ladies to the event was interesting given that previous entertainment given in the Casino had been open to the spouses of Casino members. Although no details of any musical entertainment were noted, it is not unreasonable to assume that music was performed. The Tagesanzeiger of Prager Morgenpost 31/12/1863 noted: ‘Festival of Sylvester Evening in the German Casino’.
