Commentary:

A descriptive account of this event, signed ‘n.’, was published by Prager Morgenpost 19/11/1863. The correspondent reported: ‘The first Ladies Evening in the German Casino, which took place yesterday evening, gathered in the splendidly lit venue of this convivial gathering of many German residents of our city a rich and dazzling crown of maidens and female folk, who took seats in the great hall, which was transformed into a concert hall. Before the beginning of the festival, which was appointed to commence at 8pm, one had difficulty finding space in any part of the Hall, so numerous were the attending members. The evening opened with a very witty Prologue, written by Mr Walter. At the end of this, performed by Mr Hallenstein, was a fitting thought for the nameday of Her Majesty the Emperess Elizabeth, which coincided with the commencement of the Ladies Evenings, and then finally a ‘Hail!’ to the beloved monarch, in which the assembly joined with one voice. The doughty German Singing Society „Flöte“ thereupon gave with its usual precision a German Lied. Vocal works, performed by Mrs Hallenstein and Messrs Bachmann and Krén, as will as by the Singing Society „Flöte“ inspired from the social gathering the most animated approbation. We all then regrouped to the tables and engaged in convivial conversation. There were over 600 place-settings [‘Mehr als 600 Gedecke’] occupied on this evening. The Committee of the Ladies’s Garlands [Damenkränzchen], distinguished by black-, red- and gold-edged neckties [‘Schleifen’ – literally ‘knots’] discharged their duty of welcoming and receiving the ladies with the utmost prudence and care.’

A later notice published by Prager Morgenpost 21/11/1863 reported that ‘At the first Ladies Evening of the German Casino also appeared Mr Sinzig, who performed with great precision the pieces „Phantasie über acht Tachte“ by Hiller and the „Concert Walzer“ by Wallace. The Concert Waltz was almost certainly the Grande Valse de Concert, op.27 for pianoforte by William Wallace. The work by Hiller (Ferdinand?) cannot be identified. Sinzig was most likely Charles Sinzig, a minor pianist and composer touring Europe during the middle of the nineteenth century.
