Founded in 1830 by the Society for Friends of Church Music in Bohemia (Verein der Kunstfreude für Kirchenmusik in Böhmen) as a specialized educational institute that sought to provide Bohemian musicians of mainly provincial origin with a firm grounding in the rudiments of the theory and performance of church music. Originally titled the Institute for the Education of Organists and Directors of Choirs it maintained for sixty years a position alongside the Conservatory as a leading source of advanced musical training in Czech lands.
