Georg Joseph [Abbé] Vogler

Vogler, Georg Joseph (1749-1814). German pianist, composer and priest. Child prodigy as an organist and keyboard player but received a religious education and later studied law. Became court chaplain in Mannheim in 1775 and second music director. Remained in his post when the court moved to Munich in 1780 and three years later became principal music director. Travelled extensively as a piano virtuoso and betwen 1786 and 1799 settled in Stockholm. In 1802-1804 he was in Vienna and in 1807 moved to Darmstadt where he opened a school of music. Compositions include music in most contemporary genres including many stage works and a large quantity of church music.
