Loewe, Johann Carl Gottfried (1796-1869). German composer. First taught music by his father, after which he was trained as a choral singer at Cöthen and Halle. Gained a post as Professor of Music and then director of music and organist at Stettin from 1820. His numerous songs and choral settings began to be published and he became gradually gained enormous renown for his works throughout Europe. He visited Vienna in 1844 and London in 1847, Sweden and Norway in 1851 and France in 1857. His other works include five operas, oratorios, orchestral music and instrumental music.
