Donizetti, Gaetano (1797-1848). Italian composer. Produced his first opera in Venice in 1818. Spent most of his life in Italy, composing at least one new opera almost every year until 1844. Visited Paris, producing operas there in 1839-1840 and in 1843. His last work, Caterina Cornaro, was written in 1844 before he fell victim to ill health.
